Deadline.com: Post-Apocalyptic Series ‘Aftermath’ Acquired By Syfy For Summer Launch

Aftermath, a 13-episode Canadian post-apocalyptic thriller series from Noreen Halpern’s Halfire Entertainment, is set to premiere on Syfy in the U.S. and Bell Media’s Space in Canada later this summer. Casting is currently underway, with production set to begin May 2 in Vancouver.

Created by William Laurin (Missing, Power Play) and Glenn Davis (John Woo’s Once a Thief), Aftermath centers on couple Karen and Joshua Copeland and their children Dana, Brianna and Matt, who must battle for survival after civilization comes to an apocalyptic end, triggered by massive storms, meteor strikes, earthquakes and plague – and the rise of supernatural creatures.

The Killing alums Julia Sarah Stone and Levi Meaden, and Taylor Hickson (Deadpool) play the three siblings coming of age in the Apocalypse. Stone is Dana Copeland, the practical, sardonic and quick-witted twin with a thorough knowledge of science. Hickson is the emotional, romantic and rebellious twin, Brianna Copeland. Meaden plays Matt Copeland, the fierce competitor pushed into brutality. Guest stars include Leslie Hope (Tyrant, 24), who will also direct two episodes.

Jason Stone (This is the End) will direct the first two episodes and serve as consulting producer. Laurin and Davis will executive produce with Julie Hope. Suzanne Berger and Connie Dolphin will produce. Also set to direct episodes are Stefan Pleszczinski (Being Human), Kaare Andrews (Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero), April Mullen (Killjoys) and James Marshall (The Shannara Chronicles).

“Nothing captures the human imagination quite like fantasies of our own destruction — every culture has its own myth,” said Noreen Halpern, President of Halfire Entertainment.”In this case, the end is only the beginning.”

Aftermath adds to the programming mix at Syfy, which balances homegrown original series that it develops, like 12 Monkeys and The Magicians, with less expensive Canadian acquisitions, like Haven and Dark Matter.

“Halfire Entertainment has brought to Syfy a powerful and poignant story of a lone family fighting against a mad world turned upside down,” said Chris Regina, SVP, Program Strategy, Syfy & Chiller.

Halfire will distribute in Canada. Universal Cable Productions will have International distribution.

Meaden, who also appeared in feature Olympus, is repped by APA, BMK-ENT, and Carrie Wheeler Entertainment. Hickson by KC Talent and Trademark Talent. Stone is repped by Principato Young and Red Management (in Canada).
